The Road To Reducing Resource Consumption

Posted on Nov 20, 2015, by Mollie Williams

The preservation of our environment hinges on conserving finite natural resources, like water, while minimizing outputs that do not breakdown naturally, like waste.

Milliken is in the midst of achieving some lofty goals geared toward protecting the environment. By 2020, we aim to reduce emissions, energy consumption, water consumption, and waste generation by 20%. Our progress, reflected in our inaugural global sustainability report, shows what we have achieved since 2010. We are confident that we will meet, and likely surpass, our goals by 2020.

Here’s where we stand today:

  • Emissions
    • Scope 1 emissions reduced by 17.5%
    • Scope 2 emissions reduced by 6.4%
  • Energy Consumption
    • Reduced energy use by 13.6%
    • 46% of energy used was renewable
  • Water Consumption
    • Reduced by 35.7%
  • Waste Generation
    • Reduced by 11.2%

These commitments stem from our desire to practice the highest level of environmental stewardship. Our focus is on reducing consumption on a per-product basis, which we think delivers the most meaningful impact. Between 2010 and 2014, energy use per product has decreased from 4.86 MMBTU to 4.31 MMBTU. During that same period, we decreased our water use per pound of product from 2.44 gallons to 1.61 gallons.

By 2017, we aim to have life cycle assessments (LCAs) for every one of our products. LCAs allow us to evaluate environmental and human health product responsibility, providing information about our products’ impact from cradle to grave.

While conducting LCAs on Milliken floor covering, we found that nylon manufacturing is the most significant consumer or water within carpet tile production. We realized that the most impactful way to reduce water consumption was to reduce the fiber weight of our products, which helps us decrease their overall footprint, and reduce the amount of water needed to process our products.

Processes like these help us continuously identify the areas in which we can improve. We are confident that we will meet our reduction goals by 2020, and we are committed to continuing to strive toward even higher levels of environmental stewardship moving forward.
