‘Doing Good’ Around the Globe

Posted on Dec 16, 2015, by Mollie Williams

At Milliken, our driving purpose, to ‘do good,’ extends to our associates, our communities, and the people who comprise them. In October, Milliken & Company’s headquarter community, the cities and counties neighboring Spartanburg, South Carolina, found themselves in need when a record-breaking flood struck the entire state of South Carolina. Countless families were affected by power outages, flash floods, and rising water levels that threatened their safety as well as their homes and possessions. Milliken donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross to aid in flood relief and recovery efforts. In addition, employees at each of our 37 U.S. facilities collected supplies to deliver to the Red Cross.

Like our parent company, Milliken & Company, we demonstrate our commitment to ‘do good’ throughout the year by supporting various causes. In October, the Milliken floor covering division released its inaugural sustainability report, which highlighted some of our division’s meaningful philanthropic endeavors around the world.

The Milliken Breeze Program

In China, there are more than 260 million migrant workers, many of whom are unable to support their families with the low-paying jobs they find after relocating to larger cities. In support of these families, Milliken associates in China developed the Breeze Program - an effort to help underprivileged children of migrant workers through donations such as updated computer labs in schools, one-on-one mentoring, and campus beautification programs.

Nearly all Milliken employees in China participate in the Breeze Program, with each office developing its own customized project based on local needs. During 2014, the program supported local primary schools, like Yancheng Center Primary School, located 40 miles from Milliken’s plant, through the donation or installation of carpet.

A Day of Impact

In October 2014, New York’s architecture and design community collaborated to bring positive, measurable social impact to local areas in need at the first Architecture for Humanity New York (AFHny) Day of Impact. Volunteers from a variety of organizations worked together on projects ranging from forest restoration to rebuilding homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy. To support and celebrate the scores of volunteers, Milliken hosted the Night of Impact at our New York Showroom and provided T-shirts and water bottles for the day of service.

Extraordinary Education Everyday

Last year, Milliken joined a North Carolina school district in hosting a design competition meant to spark students’ imaginations and help them develop a diverse skill set, including soft skills. Students from elementary through high school were challenged to create their ideal learning environments – through artwork and video - to exemplify Extraordinary Education Everyday (E3).

Ticket to Slide

The Ticket to Slide event in Wigan, England, benefitted Wigan & Leigh Hospice, raising money as members of the public launched themselves down a giant 110-meter slide at Wigan town center. The slide was made out of hay bales donated by farmers and Milliken cushion backing, which provided a fun, comfy ride, raising £10,000 to provide end-of-life care and support.
