Sourcing Sustainability: Supplier Requirements to Create Green Flooring

Posted on Dec 7, 2015, by Mollie Williams

Creating sustainable floor covering solutions extends beyond green operations of a manufacturer. It encompasses the activities of suppliers who provide various materials used to construct the flooring – from recycled content in cushioning to the yarn face fibers.

Designing sustainable floor covering requires partnerships with like-minded suppliers to source the materials that bring products to life. This commitment is reflected in the strong relationships and high level of standards we at Milliken share with our many suppliers.

While we acknowledge and respect the differences in culture and legal requirements throughout our global supply chain, it is imperative that our suppliers exceed compliance with applicable laws and that the supplies and services are produced and performed in ways that are ethically, socially, and environmentally responsible.

Internally, all Milliken associates proudly adhere to a code of conduct and reconfirm their compliance annually. Similarly, we expect our suppliers to uphold the ethical principles of Milliken’s Supplier Code of Conduct – or their own code, if substantially similar – as well as the highest applicable international standards.

We also expect our suppliers to operate in manners protective and considerate of the environment. At minimum, Milliken’s suppliers comply with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, and standards, and have environmental management systems in place, which might include goals to reduce environmental impact, measures and controls, reporting, audits, and training.

Milliken’s Supplier Sustainability Program requires all suppliers and vendors to:

  • Execute Milliken’s Supplier Code of Conduct
  • Provide Milliken a material safety data sheet (MSDS) for every material
  • Provide packaging information with each specific product shipment
  • Sign a written agreement stating no forced or child labor is used
  • Create a general plan for community involvement
  • Commit to comply with all environmental and safety regulations
  • Complete a signed and legally binding procurement policy

Extending these standards throughout our supply chain helps us ensure that we are thorough in upholding our purpose to ‘do good’ and maintain the highest levels of integrity and respect in every facet of our company.
